School Spotlight

Established in 1848, Chancellor University (formerly Myers University) was one of the first business colleges in the United States, as well as Cleveland’s first post-secondary educational institution. The university’s mission is to serve first-generation college students, with scholarship assistance for inner-city Cleveland students, and to provide working adults with the chance to earn a regionally-accredited degree. |
College Caravan
Working with high school guidance counselors and college admission officers, NOCHE organizes and administers the College Caravan program and travels with college admissions officers to high schools to show underserved students that higher education is a realistic goal and that Northeast Ohio has many higher education options. The Caravan currently serves high schools in the Cleveland Metropolitan, Canton City, Canton Local, Akron Public, Warrensville Heights, and Youngstown City School Districts. As Caravan facilitator, NOCHE acts as liaison between high school counselors and college admissions officers, develops school visit schedules and programming, coordinates with admissions counselors, and provides on-site support.

College Aspiration vs. College Preparation Study
This NOCHE study, funded by The Cleveland Foundation, is an evaluation of College Caravan, a program that is the cornerstone of the Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education’s Access and Aspiration initiative. This study reveals that a vast majority of high school students in underserved Northeast Ohio high schools aspire to go to college. The data also highlight gaps between college aspiration and college preparation; yet with targeted interactions with students, such as those offered in College Caravan, aspiration-enhancing programs have a recognizable impact on high school students' college readiness.
