About the Northeast Ohio Talent Dividend

The Northeast Ohio Talent Dividend provides the perfect opportunity to reap significant economic benefit for Northeast Ohio by a targeted effort to increase college completion in the region.  With Ohio’s rank below national averages for every age category for every level of college degrees, and the projection that almost 60% of new jobs in the state will require some postsecondary education by 2018, Northeast Ohio must come together to increase the number of people with college degrees.  Our goal is to make Northeast Ohio the best talent pool in the nation. The Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education is pleased to lead this achievable and worthwhile effort.

The Northeast Ohio Talent Dividend is guided by a Steering Committee of business, education, civic, nonprofit, and philanthropic stakeholders and an Action Plan with overarching goals to

  • improve college readiness,
  • increase retention to degree completion, and
  • increase degree attainment among adults with some college and no degree.

At the annual Northeast Ohio Talent Dividend Summit on December 16, 2011, at Corporate College East, NOCHE announced that the number of degree holders increased by 41,643, a 1.4 percentage point increase between 2009 and 2010, which accounted for more than half of the increase in the number of degrees for all of Ohio.  The region is on its way to achieving its goal of one million college degree holders by 2014.

According to CEOs for Cities’ calculations, a one percentage point increase in a region’s college degree attainment yields a $763 increase in per capita income.  Northeast Ohio’s 1.4 percentage point increase led to a $1,162 increase in per capita income, equal to more than $4 billion in new personal income in one year.

NEO Talent Dividend Summit Celebrates 41,000 More College Graduates

The Northeast Ohio Talent Dividend Summit was a resounding success.  More than one hundred civic, business, and education leaders in Northeast Ohio attended to hear how Northeast Ohio moved the needle on college completion. Dr. Mark Sniderman from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland highlighted the economic importance to have more degree holders.  NOCHE Executive Director Ann Womer Benjamin highlighted progress through the metrics developed by the Steering Committee.  She shared that Northeast Ohio is now home to an additional 41,000 college degree holders, and our economy improved, too. The total personal income in Northeast Ohio increased by over $4 billion. Dr. Gordon Gee from The Ohio State University shared his stories on college completion, along with his vision for success as the leader of the largest institution in the state of Ohio. The event also provided the opportunity for attendees to walk away with a copy of the 2011 Northeast Ohio Talent Dividend annual report, a copy of which can be viewed by clicking this link. Ideastream was on hand to record the event and photos for the event are below. Keep up the great work, Northeast Ohio! We are truly making progress by degrees.

Early College High Schools Successes

Two Northeast Ohio early college high schools are recently in the news for their unique approach to education.  After receiving the 'excellent' designation on the state report card, Early College High School at the University of Akron was recently profiled in the Plain Dealer.   Additionally, Canton’s Early College High School made news in a report from the Stark Education Partnership for increasing the percentage of Stark County residents pursuing a college degree.  The report can be found here - Reaching for 80%: How Post Secondary Opportunities are Changing the College Going Culture.     The national initiative (website) of early college high school allow students to earn both a high school diploma AND an Associate’s degree (or two years of credit towards a Bachelor’s degree) in four years.  Early college high school especially targets students who are the first in their family to attend college.  Early college high schools in Northeast Ohio (Akron Early College High School, Design Lab Early College High School, Early College High School in Canton, Early College High School in Lorain County, and Youngstown Early College High School) are contributing to the Northeast Ohio Talent Dividend goal to increase the level of college readiness and increase the number of degrees attained in the region.
